Overview

The Flexible Learning Centre (FLC) is an alternative to mainstream lessons in school; it is a learning environment that encourages positive behaviour, choices and relationships, raises self-esteem and empowers young people to experience success through bespoke learning pathways. The Flexible Learning Centre team seeks to assess need and responds to the requirements of the Every Child Matters Agenda and the SEND code of practice. We work pro-actively with students, parents/carers, relevant external partner agencies and the community to reduce barriers to learning. The FLC works with hard to reach students from mainstream lessons and allows them to progress through school and into post 16.

Student comments

Students speak positively about the FLC and below are some of their comments about their provision. Some of their thoughts are outlined below:

The FLC helps me because:

  • I need more breaks

  • It is more relaxed than school

  • Teaching groups are small

  • I can have time out

  • People understand me better

  • I can still achieve GCSEs

  • I get help to change the way I deal with things

  • We get rewards when we get it right
