What is it?

Giving your time to do something useful, without getting paid for it.

​Why bother?

• Gives you the chance to help others/ be involved with something you are really passionate about.
• Helps you to develop new skills – confidence, working with others, communication…
• Offers an insight into the world of work and is something good to put on your CV.
• Can gain a reference for when you apply for Part-time Jobs, Apprenticeships or Colleges/Sixth Forms.

Things to Consider

• ​You need to decide how much time you can devote to volunteering. Some organisations might ask for a minimum amount of hours every week whilst others might ask for a few hours every month. Some opportunities might be a one-off event or project.
• Some volunteering opportunities might not be available for under 16 year olds, due to insurance or safeguarding. Some will state an age requirement, more require you to be 18 years old.
• Some organisations might be looking for specific skills or previous experience but the vast majority want people who have time to give and who are enthusiastic.

Our Volunteer Centre has been long established in Rotherham, providing support to groups and organisations who work with volunteers, and supporting and promoting opportunities to individuals who would like to volunteer themselves.

Volunteering and Work experience (or internship) is a valuable tool, helping you make the right career choices and get the job you want. Some schools in Rotherham offer you the chance to take part in a work experience placement in Year 10 or 11, lasting usually for 3 weeks. However you don’t need to be in school to take part in a placement, many companies will be able and willing to offer you a placement.

Every hour is valued and valuable, and we will support you with inductions and training, keep in touch with newsletters, and provide you with the tools needed, including reimbursing travel expenses.
